This is one image from a series I’ve made of my local hairdressers. I wanted to show the characters under the cape and behind the scissors in a bold vector style, with strong, colourful shapes and expressive lines.
I’ve tried to insert a bit of humour and charm and each image depicts a separate aspect of hairdressing and grooming.
Why do you deserve to win?
I feel that many vector illustrations achieve stylistic simplicity at the cost of expressing emotion. The people are there and you can see what they’re doing but you don’t know what they’re thinking or feeling.
I also feel that there is often a lack of observed detail in illustrations.
I’ve worked hard in this series to show haircutting with as much visual economy as possible. I’ve added detail but made sure that it was an integral part of the visual language of the piece, rather than just added to the frame.
