A lot of the plastic that flows into the ocean is from littering. And not just from the beach but also from within the cities. Wind and water carry the litter to nature, where it does a lot of harm to the ecosystem. This is a poster campaign I developed myself and later on sold to the Plastic Soup Foundation.
Why do you deserve to win?
During this project I did a lot of research about what would be an effective way to reach the audience. I ended up using a metaphorical illustration working together with the text, so the viewer has to think about it for a short while. I created the dead animals in these illustrations by using trash that I picked up from the streets to make the concept work effectively. I think the phrases work best in Dutch, but the text says things like ‘You lost something’. I don’t want to shout it in their face in an angry way, but I want them to figure out themselves that it is a better idea to put waste in a bin.
I actually made this campaign a little earlier than last year, but the PSF never really used it the way it was meant for. For me that’s a big disappointment, especially because I agreed that I wouldn’t sell them to other organizations. Till now they have only been used as flyers for kids, but actually they’re purposed to be on the streets so the audience is confronted before they litter. I think they could be very effective in that way.
